With the time change this weekend, more runners will be running in the dark this season. Newton Ambassador Ursula Rafer is sharing her tips for running safely through the fall and winter.
1. **Route Planning**: Choose well-lit, populated areas. Avoid secluded or unfamiliar routes, especially during early mornings or late evenings, try to take new routes daily.
2. **Visibility**: Wear bright, reflective clothing to ensure visibility to others, including drivers and other runners. There are lots of great head lamps and lighted vests on the market.
3. **Stay Alert**: Avoid distractions like loud music in headphones. Consider using only one earbud or keeping the volume low.
4. **Inform Others**: Let someone know your running route and estimated return time. Let some know when you’re heading out-even if you use an app tracker.
5. **Self-Defense Tools**: Carry items like pepper spray, a whistle, or a personal alarm.
6. **Running Groups**: Join running groups/clubs or run with a buddy, which can deter potential threats and provide immediate assistance if needed.
7. **Technology**: Use GPS tracking apps to share your location with trusted contacts. Some fitness trackers and smartphones have safety features that can alert emergency contacts.
8. **Varied Routes and Times**: Avoid running the same route at the same time every day to reduce predictability.
9. **Trust Your Instincts**: If something feels off, trust your gut and remove yourself from the situation. Opt inside if necessary and find help.
10. **Learn Self-Defense**: Consider taking a self-defense class to build confidence and learn how to protect yourself in case of an emergency.
