FAQs: Why Choose Newton Running Shoes?

Newton Running shoe technology is unique

Newton Running shoes are the only running shoe company whose entire line of products are built exclusively to allow a natural running gait. Unlike any other running shoes on the market, all Newton Running shoes are built on a level platform, one that mirrors the geometry of your foot. Regular running shoes have a moderate to high heel lift. In addition, Newton Running Shoes incorporate Action/Reaction Technology™ that provides up to 60% more cushioning and 40% more energy return than leading brands.

Newton Running shoes reduce heel lift

Heel lift (or any other geometric change underfoot) affects your running gait. Heel lift, more than about 5 mm for most runners, causes a heel "strike" that is non-existent in a natural (barefoot) gait. Heel strike causes shock loading to the unflexed leg during the running gait cycle. A heel lift over 5 mm loads the leg ahead of the runner's center of gravity for moderate running speed. At this point the leg is not flexed enough to absorb impact with the body's muscles and tendons (the way a barefoot runner does), resulting in enormous loads to the structure and joints. This body position also results in a very unstable position of the lower leg and foot, amplifying rotational forces and associated injuries. Most people are not aware that current running shoes typically have 12 to 22 mm heel lift, resulting in aggressive ramp angles of up to 15% (racing "flats" are typically 6-10 mm.)

We're the Leader in Natural Running

Newton Running is the leading manufacturer of natural running shoes. We are also the only company that sells shoes built exclusively to facilitate a natural, injury preventive running gait. In addition, Newton Running shoes enhance running performance, as proven by studies at MIT and the University of Heidelberg.

We promote optimal running form

Natural running form without bare feet requires a shoe that allows your foot to engage the ground as if unshod. Any geometric change underfoot interferes with the natural running gait and can cause injury over time. In addition, a shoe should be flexible enough to allow your foot to move naturally, and protective enough to prevent injury on harsh surfaces like concrete and asphalt.

Scientific studies have validated our technology

Research has shown that Newton Running shoes improve efficiency, reduce impact and provide a greater energy return.

Newton Running Shoes are designed with injury prevention in mind

The cause of most running injuries is unnatural forces repeatedly impacting the body over time, and Newton Running shoes are designed to prevent injuries. These forces include biomechanical misalignments, increased loads on foot strike, and poor cushioning underfoot. Virtually all unnatural forces can be attributed to shoe geometry and materials, that in turn can cause poor running form and associated injuries.

Good running form and appropriate footwear can prevent most injury. Good running form means to run naturally, as if with bare feet. Natural running form starts with midfoot loading, that is the peak forces during ground contact occur on the midfoot or forefoot under your center of gravity. This is hard to do with a lifted heel on a shoe, since it will require you to point your toe toward the ground to overcome the heel lift. Newton Running shoes make it easy to load your foot under your center of gravity because there is very little heel to get in the way.

What's the Buzz?

  • ...Recently, balking at the $175 USD, I chose to replace my worn down Newton Gravity's with a pair of "traditional" shoes, a model which I have worn in past years (and run marathons in). My first 20K run left me with sore hips and knees, and I felt slow like a worn-out dog. Those brand-new ***** will be lawn-cutting shoes now. My "worn-down" Newtons run better than those brand new heel strikers...
